Very low Standard: Paper’s double-entendre headline doesn’t do anyone justice

C is for clickbait.

In its Wed, Sep 21 print issue, as well as its digital version, The Standard featured a banner story with a headline that is guaranteed to cause all sorts of unsavory reactions.

After all, what other kind of reaction do you expect people to give to “Witnesses finger Leila”?

Arguably, even if a person doesn’t like Sen. Leila de Lima, that person should still give her some respect as she is a duly elected public servant.

Then again, perhaps the folks at The Standard see it another way.

In an attempt to find the reason for their poor headline choice, we turned to their “About Us” section, which kind of explains their poor judgement.

“In tone and content, the online edition mirrors the editorial thrust of the newspaper. While hewing to the traditional precepts of fairness and objectivity, [The Standard] believes the news of the day need not be staid, overly long, or dry,” it said.

But does that necessarily mean it’s fair game to use a headline that’s so obviously nasty?

Dear Standard, grow up!

Coconuts Manila has reached out to The Standard for its reaction and will update this story as soon as we hear from them.
