Text scammers use Mayor Sara Duterte’s name to solicit money

There’s a special place in hell for people who are not only making money out of the misery of others, but also using someone else’s identity in the process of fooling others.

The City Government of Davao has issued two separate warnings on their official Facebook page about unscrupulous individuals who are using the mayor’s name “to solicit money from certain people, including politicians.”

The first warning/statement was issued Fri night, Sep 23. It was about a certain Nathan Garanzo who was soliciting money allegedly for Mayor Duterte’s fundraising efforts for the victims of Super-typhoon ‘Ferdie’ in the northern islands of Batanes.

The official statement reads:

It has come to the attention of Davao City Mayor Inday Sara Duterte that a person introducing himself as Nathan Garanzo has been using her name to solicit money from certain people, including politicians.

The office of Mayor Inday Sara wishes to inform the public that she has not authorized anyone to solicit money on her behalf nor is she involved in any fundraising activity for Batanes as reportedly claimed by Nathan Garanzo.

This statement is made to warn the public against dealing with Nathan Garanzo or depositing money to the BPI account of one Rechie B. Banduriao, who is made to appear as Mayor Inday Sara’s finance team head.

Daghang salamat.

The next day, Sep 24, the City Government of Davao released another warning/statement. This time, it was a fundraiser for the victims of the deadly blast in Davao City that left 14 dead and at least 60 people injured.

The second statement reads:

Davao City Mayor Inday Sara Duterte issues this new public warning against the unscrupulous activities of certain individuals who are using her name to solicit money.

On Saturday morning, Mayor Inday Sara was informed about a text message sent to a member of the House of Representatives from a person who introduced himself or herself as Charisma Jaranilla.

The text message reads: “I was instructed to get in touch with you because Mayor Sara would like to invite you for her fundraising event in Davao tonight. Also, you could support the fundraising event for the family of the bombing incident happened in Davao.”

Mayor Inday Sara reiterates her previous warning that she has not authorized anyone to solicit money for the people of Batanes or for the victims of the Davao bomb explosion. She has not also allowed fundraising activities to be held related to any of these incidents.

For the information of the public, donations for the victims of the Davao bombing were either directly received by families of the victims, by officials of Davao City LGU, or deposited to Davao City LGU’s official Land Bank of the Philippines account.

Mayor Inday Sara deplores the folly and heartlessness of some people and how they take advantage of a tragedy to financially benefit themselves.

Mayor Duterte, the daughter of President Rodrigo Duterte, and her office urges everyone to be vigilant if they receive any message about her alleged fundraising activities.
