Is this the first case of self-destructing Samsung S7 Edge in the PH?

Antipolo City make-up artist Weng Briones’ Facebook post went viral on Fri, Sep 23, when she posted photos of her burned Samsung S7 Edge, which used to gold and spotless.

As of posting, Briones’ post has been shared more than 18,800 times in three days.

In an interview with ABS-CBN News, Briones said her 16-year-old daughter was using her phone when it overheated and smoke started to come out.

Natakot kaming lahat, naglabasan lahat ng nasa loob ng salon,” she told ABS-CBN News.

(We were all so scared, so we went out of the salon.)

Puro smoke lang po tapos kusang bumuka ‘yung phone dahil lumobo na yung battery,” she adds.

(It was all smoke, then the phone cracked because the battery was already bloated.)

Someone inside the salon doused the phone with water, while another staff covered the phone with a wet towel.

After the incident, Briones went to the Samsung Store in SM Taytay where she bought the handset. The store offered to replace the unit, but Briones declined.

Sabi ko gusto ko ng refund kasi kung papalitan lang din nila. Ganun pa rin. Andun pa rin yung fear ko na maulit. They did not resist naman. Sabi lang nila na tatawag sila sa main office. Then after a few minutes ay inabot na nila sa kin yung pera,” Briones shared.

(I said I want a refund because if they’ll just replace it, then nothing’ll change. I’m still afraid that it would happen again. They didn’t resist and they simply called their main office. After a few minutes, they gave me the money.)

The Samsung store refunded Briones the full amount of PHP 39,990 for the handset, but didn’t offer an explanation why the phone self-destructed.

Samsung has officially recalled 2.5 million Galaxy Note 7 phones due to reports of exploding batteries, but they have not addressed the reported defects of their S7 Edge and S7 phones.
