Barangay 143: Basketball-themed anime, from company behind ‘Doraemon,’ coming to PH in 2017

Is there anything in the world that can make boys happier than sports and anime?

TV Asahi, the guys behind the well-loved robotic cat “Doraemon,” is working on its first televised anime series specifically targeting the Philippines, Nikkei Asian Review reports.

Called “Barangay 143,” the show is about high school basketball players in Manila, the home of oldest professional basketball league in Asia.

Something like Slam Dunk? Probably, but much more mature and with a Filipino twist.

“People in fast-growing emerging economies have begun to look for familiar stories they can relate to,” said Takahiro Kishimoto of the international business department at TV Asahi.

Japanese anime directors from TV Asahi are handling the character design, but Synergy88, a local animation company in Quezon City is in charge of the script and production. We can expect the story to have a local touch.

Barangay 143 will begin airing in 2017.
