No more texting: Two high-power signal jammers installed inside Bilibid

Gadgets like mobile phones and even laptops are widely smuggled inside the prison walls, which make it easier for drug lords and criminal masterminds to continue their illegal activities even when they are isolated.

To solve the problem, authorities installed two military-grade high-output power signal jammers inside the New Bilibid Prison’s (NBP) Building 14, where 53 high-profile convicts are currently detained.

Designed to cut-off the inmates’ communication from the outside world, the jammers from Korea are expected to block various signals, including GPS, 3G, 4G, WiFi, and radio frequencies.

The first jammer was installed at the facility’s holding area on Tue, Sep 27. The second one will likely be installed at the facility’s watch tower, CNN reports.

Department of Justice (DOJ) undersecretary Enan Orceo believes this move can help minimize illegal activities inside the NBP.

The jammers, worth PHP2M each, were housed inside a steel casing that can prevent anyone, including NBP personnel from tampering with the units.

The funds for the signal jammers were from supporters of President Duterte.

Just one quick question: Does this mean even Bilibid employees won’t be able to make calls and texts or connect to the Internet?
