There’s a new text scam in town: They pretend to be hired killers

Text scammers have reached a new level of low.

Feeding on the fear of their poor victims, the scammers now threaten to kill unless they get what they want, which is money, of course.

How does it work? The potential victim will receive an anonymous text from a “killer” who claims that he was hired by a “boss” who wants to have him or her harmed and killed. The scammer will harass and threaten until the victim feels vulnerable.

To make his script believable, the “killer” will throw in details like the victim’s home address and office location. He will also add threats to the victim’s family.

Then claiming to be a Good Samaritan, the “killer” will say that he will not do the job, and ask for money to leave town instead. Depending on the victim’s vulnerability, he will ask for PHP10,000 to PHP20,000 to be sent via the pawnshop Palawan Express.

Without going into details, the netizen who posted about the scam said that there were loopholes in the killer’s story reeking of scam.

They reported the case to the police and the National Bureau of Investigation. Fortunately, nothing was taken from them.

Our takeaway? Be careful with your personal details, especially with what you put online.  Scammers can easily use these things to make a victim scared.
