City Health Department clarifies: No Makati resident infected with Zika

The City Health Department of Makati clarified on Sat, Oct 15, that no cases of Zika virus have been reported there.

This comes after the Department of Health (DOH) initially announced that there are two Zika cases in Metro Manila and identified the infected patients as “a non-child bearing 27-year-old female in Mandaluyong and a 42-year-old male in Makati.”

It turns out the Zika-infected man is a Mandaluyong resident.

“City health officer Dr. Bernard Sese said the 42-year-old male earlier reported by the DOH to be one of the two latest cases of Zika infection in Metro Manila only works in Makati but resides in Mandaluyong,” reports Robertzon Ramirez in The Philippine Star.

“The male patient found positive for Zika virus, who is a non-resident, is already well,” Sese said in a statement.

The report noted: “Sese said they would intensify ovi-larvitrap operations in barangays and public schools to prevent the transmission of the Zika virus. He said they have stepped up efforts to determine areas with a high density of mosquitoes through the setting up of ovi-larvitraps.”

For her part, Mayor Abigail Binay asked residents to remain vigilant and participate in a cleanup drive to destroy breeding sites for mosquitoes.
