Dubai-based Filipina’s art featured on red Starbucks holiday cups

Perhaps, only this generation will understand the honor that comes with seeing one’s art on a disposable coffee cup.

On Nov 10, the coffee chain giant Starbucks released its holiday red cups, which is a 19-year-old tradition known to usher in the holidays. This year, the cups feature designs from latte-loving artists, including an artwork by Dubai-based Filipina Anz Soza.

Soza’s Christmas doodle has a festive design with ornaments, ribbons and dreamcatchers. She is the only Filipina in the list of 13 artist picked from over 1,200 entries.

The 32-year-old Fine Arts graduate started the hobby a year ago, and has drawn on nearly a hundred cups since. She shares her artworks on her Instagram account

“If you find last year’s cup controversial, this cup is very special for us artists who made it here. It made our dreams come true,” Soza captioned one of her posts, talking about last year’s plain red cup, which was criticized for not being festive enough.

She had learned about the good news in Sept, and she was flown to New York for the launch.

Tuwing ngdu-drawing ako sa cup, ini-imagine ko na may gagamit ng cup na yun, na tinitignan nya yung ginawa ko, parang kinakausap kung sino man yung iinom na para pong kahit na halimbawa bad day or hectic schedule, mako-convince siya ng cup ko na everything’s going to be okay,” she told CNN Philippines.

(‘Everytime I draw on cups, I think of the person having a drink. It is as if I am talking to them and telling them, that despite having a bad day or a hectic schedule, everything is going to be okay.’)

The red holiday cups are available in in 25,000 Starbucks stores in 75 countries.
