Vice Ganda on MMFF 2016 selection: ‘Quality is subjective’

My movies are quality films.

This is what Vice Ganda said during the press conference of his upcoming movie The Super Parental Guardians on Tue, Nov 22.

The statement came about when Vice was asked if he feels offended with online comments saying his movie did not make it as an official entry in the 2016 Metro Manila Film Festival because it was not a “quality film.”

As you may know, the revamped MMFF prioritized story and technical excellence over commercial viability when it chose the eight entries for the film festival. As a result, seven of the eight entries were “independent films.”

Only the MMFF 2016 entry Kath & Vince & James was produced by a major film company, Star Cinema.

But Vice said he did not feel offended by the comment, especially since many of his fans expressed support for his movie despite the snub.

He added: “The word quality, the definition of the word quality is subjective. What may be quality to you may not be quality to me, di ba?”

Vice — whose previous MMFF movies since 2012 were big box office hits — said he believes “quality is achieved when you give the people what their money is worth, what they want to have, what they want to feel after that movie.”

“Quality, ang masasabi kong quality, kung paglabas ng sinehan, nakuha ng tao yung gusto n’yang makuha pagkatapos ng pelikulang yun. Yun ang quality,” he added.

(You can say a movie is of quality is tao who come out of the theaters got what they want to get from the movie.)

Vice ended: “And nararamdaman ko na my movies were all quality dahil ang mga gustong maramdaman ng mga tao ay nakuha nila.”

(My movies were all quality because people got what they want to feel after watching them.)

Vice’s defense of The Super Parental Guardians comes days after it was announced that the movie will open in theaters on Wed, Nov 30.
