Ibukota kosong: Survey says 86% of Jakarta residents will be leaving the capital for Idul Fitri

The annual Idul Fitri exodus is almost upon us. Soekarno-Hatta airport has already reported a significant increase in the number of departures and the results of a recent survey show that only a small fraction of Jakarta’s citizens will be spending the post-Ramadan holiday in the capital.

The KedaiKOPI Survey Institute conducted a telephone poll from June 15-23 asking respondents about their plans for Lebaran. About 86% said they were planning to pulang kampung (go to their hometowns) at some point this holiday season.

Asked what mode of transport they were planning to get home, 40.4% of respondents said they were using private vehicles, with 27.9% taking their cars and 10.2% taking their motorcycles. About 19% said they would by flying home, while 21% are opting for trains and 17.7% are taking buses.

KedaiKOPI said that they shared their findings with the government to help inform their decisions to regulate traffic and safety during the exodus from the capital. The survey results are based on telephone interviews with 400 respondents and KedaiKOPI gave it a margin of error of approximately 4.9%.
