Politics mars graduation rites in Taguig

A reported attempt by Taguig Representative Sigfrido Tiñga to speak at the graduation rites of a public elementary school outside his district, an attempt that was blocked by Department of Education officials, has prompted cries of political harassment.

According to the Philippine Star, Rep. Tiñga, of Taguig’s 2nd legislative district, tried to give a speech before graduating students of a school in the 1st District. He was prevented from doing so, which reportedly led to “a squabble between his security escorts and a city hall employee.”

DepEd Taguig-Pateros administrator George Tizon said  they are “strictly implementing guidelines from the department preventing politicians from using graduation ceremonies for political purposes.”

“Taguig Councilor Carlo Papa said yesterday that barring Tiñga from speaking at a graduation ceremony in a city public school was a sign that Mayor Lani Cayetano has allegedly started to harass her political opponents,” the report said.

Councilor Papa is running for vice mayor of Taguig City, under the congressman’s sister Rica Tiñga, who is running against Mayor Cayetano. Rep. Tiñga is not running for office.
