MRT Jakarta, the country’s first ever subway system, may well become the main railway transportation system in the Greater Jakarta Area over the coming decade as plans for the construction of several new lines have been announced.
As reported by Detik, PT MRT Jakarta recently announced that it has carried out feasibility analyses for where additional MRT lines could be built and have come up with 10 possible routes that encompass Jakarta and its satellite cities of Bogor, Depok, Tangerang, and Bekasi.
The 10 lines, which would measure 230 kilometers in total, are as follows:
Lebak Bulus-Ancol Barat
Cikarang-Balaraja
Bandara Soetta-Kampung Bandan
Cilincing-Lebak Bulus
Karawaci-Senayan-Cawang-Cikarang
Lebak Bulus-Rawa Buntu-Karawaci
Bekasi Utara-Bekasi Selatan
Pluit-Grogol-Kuningan-Depok

It should be noted that the Lebak Bulus-Ancol Barat line would be a northward extension of the existing Lebak Bulus-Bundaran HI line. Construction for that, as well as an East-West line connecting Cikarang and Balaraja was already scheduled to begin this year and is expected to be operationally ready by 2025.
An MRT official said that those two lines are the only ones that are confirmed at the moment, while the remaining eight have yet to be approved due to funding and legal considerations, which has often been related to land procurement in the past. Once approved, construction of all eight lines will be carried out concurrently.
