An attempted robbery at a Kimia Farma pharmacy on West Teuku Umar Street in West Denpasar at dawn on Sunday was foiled by the store’s employees, though it appears their lives were never really in danger.

As seen in footage from the store’s CCTV cameras, the suspected robber — whose face was concealed with a mask — pointed what appeared to be a gun at the pharmacy’s employees.

One of the key witnesses, a pharmacy employee identified as 29-year-old Adi Yasa, said he was at the back of the store when he saw the suspect holding up his colleague, Gede Dwi Putra, who was manning the cashier. He said the suspected robber, a tall man, didn’t say anything to Gede, only pointed the gun at him and gestured to the employees to give him money.

“The guy pointed his weapon at my friend, who swiftly fended him off. He began to hesitate and backed off. My friend called me, ‘Gus, Gus’ and when he saw me coming, he ran away,” Adi said yesterday, as quoted by Detik

West Denpasar Police Chief Johannes Nainggolan said Gede attempted to grab the suspect’s gun but he ran away before he could take anything from the crime scene.

In another twist, police said that the weapon used by the suspect was only a toy gun.

“The firearm was a toy, based on the result of our investigation of the CCTV footage, the suspect was afraid when he was confronted,” Johannes told reporters yesterday, as quoted by Detik.

As of today, police say they are currently still pursuing the culprit.
