At least 300 people gathered near the Department of Justice (DOJ) building along Padre Faura street in Manila today, Thu, Aug 27, ahead of the expected rally of the Iglesia ni Cristo (INC).

“Superintendent Albert Barot, commander of Manila Police Station 5 (Ermita), said the persons started filling up the walkway across the DOJ compound around 11:30am,” reports John Roson on Inquirer.net.

Barot told reporters: “May hinihintay na lang ata sila na speaker (They are just waiting for a speaker).” He also added, “May coordination naman sila sa amin (They coordinated with us).”

The so-called gathering is perceived as the INC members’ response to dismissed INC minister Isaias Samson Jr. filing a complaint against eight members of the church’s Sanggunian before the DOJ. The following INC Sanggunian members were named in the complaint: Glicerio B. Santos Jr., Radel. G. Cortez, Bienvenido C. Santiago Sr., Mathusalem V. Pareja, Rolando A. Esguerra, Eraño Codera, Rolando Cabrerra, and Maximo Bularan.

The INC had reportedly questioned the motive of Justice Secretary Leila de Lima for “what it deemed was ‘extraordinary attention’ given to the illegal detention case filed by Samson against the leaders of the church.”
