Police on Sat, Nov 28, intercepted a closed van containing some 80 dog carcasses in Tagaytay.

An unidentified source informed authorities that dog meat is being smuggled twice a week from Batangas to Baguio City by supplier Francis Balisong Sr.

Dog meat is popular in Baguio where restaurants reportedly pay about PHP100 per kilo and serve it at an even higher price to their customers. The source added that the 10 restaurants in the city serve about 45 dogs daily.

Discovered inside the intercepted truck was a large plastic tank covered with tarpaulin and several barrels and basins. The tank contained gutted and burnt dog carcasses.

Driver Armando Biag, his minor son and porter Apollo Traqueña initially denied knowledge of their illegal cargo.

Traqueńa later admitted his hand in the selling dog meat, saying his family really needed the extra PHP500 he earned from every illegal delivery.

The investigation is still ongoing. The suspects may face charges over the violation of the Animal Welfare Act.
