COCONUTS HOT SPOT — Som’s Noodle House in Barangay Poblacion in Makati used to be the only culprit luring crowds of people to the rather desolate Alger Street. Now, there’s somebody else to blame and it is serving good Mexican food.
The guys behind A’Toda Madre Tequila Bar just opened Tacos Chingones, Manila’s first mobile taco cart on Alger Street. It serves authentic street side snacks from the city of Guadalajara, Mexico. And because it is all about street food: don’t expect seats and tables, nor forks and knives. It’s street food the way it should be eaten.
The menu is short but varied. It only has two items: gringa (PHP100), which is like a quesadilla and taco (PHP50), which is like a silver-dollar pancake sandwich with tortilla as pancakes.
Each comes with your choice of meat: al pastor (pineapple-infused pork), bistek (thin sliced marinated sirloin), carnitas (braised pork), chorizo (pork sausage with Mexican spices), and lengua (ox tongue braised in birria sauce); as well as sauces: salsa rojo or verde.
It used to be open just between 6pm to 4am but this week, Tacos Chingones began operating in the daytime to cater to offices nearby.
The short but sweet hand-written menu lends legit street cred
