Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) Secretary Corazon Soliman confirmed that a social worker has been sent to assess the mother seen slapping her newborn child in a video that recently made the rounds on social media.
“The video was uploaded on Facebook by a certain Nil Aquino Sabangan. It a woman slapping a crying child lying beside her in a hospital bed,” reports GMA News Online.
The location tag on the video read: “Pasay City General Hospital.”
The report noted: “Soliman said that the mother in the video may be suffering from postpartum depression in addition to a previous psychological condition. She added that the hospital will also be made accountable for the incident.”
Soliman told the news program 24 Oras, “Mag-coordinate at i-assess, tingnan ang kalagayan ng nanay kung may kakayahan siyang mag-alaga ng isang sanggol. Kasi kung wala siyang kakayahan, kukunin muna namin ‘yung sanggol (We’ll coordinate and assess the situation, we’ll see if the mother has the capacity to take care of her child. If she doesn’t, we’ll have to take the baby into our custody).”
The hospital refused to give a statement to GMA News and only said it is “willing to cooperate with the DSWD’s investigation.”
