‘World Analytics Hub’ title for PH? First, speed up the Internet

We’re keeping our fingers crossed that by 2015, our Internet connecton speed is way faster than 3.52mbps.

We’ll need that if we really want to become the world analytics hub by 2015, a title Trade and Industry Secretary Gregory Domingo has set his eyes on.

“Rest assured that the DTI will give its full support…to make the Philippines the global center for smarter analytics by 2015. This target is achievable if we do things right,” he says in this report filed by Bernie Magkilat in Manila Bulletin.

The country already accounts for 10 percent of the US$212-billion global analytics industry.

This spanking new industry will generate 4.4 million jobs by 2015 and only 30 percent can be served by the world, adds the report.

What, exactly, is “data analytics”?

It’s “analyzing huge data from social media, online data and all other data available. With smarter analytics, companies can anticipate business trends, suggest consumption patterns, address consumer issues and make timely decisions from thorough analysis of a mammoth of data that are not easily apparent,” the report explains.

Already 12 universities are offering courses that lead to this specialization and the Philippine strategy is to start teaching analytics to Grade 11 and 12 students.

We’ve already jumped on the nursing, computer science and culinary bandwagons — this time, the Philippines could actually be ahead of the demand.
