Shoulda coulda woulda: Pedestrian lanes in Salcedo Village, Makati

THE PROBLEM: Vehicles won’t stop for pedestrians in clearly marked pedestrian lane in Salcedo Village.

THE INCIDENT: For you, dear readers, I risked my life twice today. While walking down a pedestrian on Leviste Street, a taxi nearly ran me over because he couldn’t be bothered to slow down despite a speed bump right before the pedestrian lane. I would have taken a photo but I was thinking about insurance (mine) and criminal liability (the driver’s).

SHOULDA WOULDA COULDA: The LTO could emphasize right-of-way rules in driver’s seminars, and remind road warriors about road courtesy. There are many useless traffic signs out there, but one that might help is a reminder that pedestrians have the right of way, especially in clearly marked lanes. Also, Presidential Decree No. 1958 obliges motorists to give way to pedestrians. Obviously, whoever signed that decree hasn’t been to Quezon Avenue. But that’s another story.
