Shoulda coulda woulda: ‘No Right Turn on Red Signal’ causes jams

Motorists coming from Paseo de Roxas ignoring the red light and traffic sign while turning right to Gil Puyat. Opposing traffic from Gil Puyat turning left to Paseo de Roxas leave the road open to EDSA/Kalayaan-bound vehicles turning right from Paseo.

THE PROBLEM: The “No Right Turn on Red Signal” sign in the corner of Paseo de Roxas and Gil Puyat causes headaches for motorists heading towards the Kalayaan flyover and EDSA.

THE INCIDENT: Those who observed this new rule were angrily honked at by motorists behind them because it doesn’t make sense to stop when the road was clear for a turn. Because of the volume of traffic, it’s not unusual for vehicles bound for this direction to use even the center lane that is occupied by vehicles going straight to Bel-Air.

SHOULDA COULDA WOULDA: If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it! Remove the sign. It is just confusing for well-meaning motorists who want to follow the rules but are causing traffic instead. It is also frustrating to drivers who intimately know the area’s traffic conditions and think the sign goes against common sense.
