Shoulda coulda woulda: Dark road to Bonifacio Global City

THE PROBLEM: The EDSA Kalayaan Buendia Flyover has streetlamps, but in the two years we have been driving there everyday, they are never turned on when it’s dark. And while the flyover is bordered by concrete barriers, there are no retroreflective road markings to ensure that people don’t drive over the edge. There are surprise driving challenges during the daytime too, ranging from a broken work zone barricade strewn on the side of the road and the occasional heap of trash from torn garbage bags.

THE INCIDENT: Apart from relying only on headlights to drive through – and thankfully not over – an unlit, inadequately marked flyover, motorists occasionally have to evade trash and other debris. Judging from their random placement, trash probably fell from garbage trucks and are further scattered by passing vehicles.

SHOULDA COULDA WOULDA: Successfully dodging various items that have no place in a busy road is exactly why you had to maneuver through traffic cones during your driver’s test. With enough practice, you may be able to develop the ability to see better in the dark and avoid disaster during a rainy night. Otherwise you can learn to echolocate  steer yourself away from the unpainted barriers of the flyover while shouting “This is where my !@#$* taxes go!” Call Engr. Emilio Llavor of MMDA’s Road Safety Unit at 882-4154 to 74 loc. 289 and share your ideas on how the EDSA Kalayaan Flyover can be improved.
