Shoulda coulda woulda: Streetlamps in Coronado Street

THE PROBLEM: What streetlamps? Exactly.

THE INCIDENT: It’s not that hard to make the turn to the Makati-Mandaluyong Bridge at dusk, which was when these photos were taken. At night, it’s another story. To determine its exact location, I must hope that the car in front of me is likewise going that direction, or a jeep is making a stop at the most inconvenient spot — at the corner.

Otherwise I must rely on muscle memory: “I think I should start turning right…here!” because even if the curb is painted migraine yellow it just disappears in the dark. Apart from headlights, which are not sufficient, the buildings across the river and streetlights along the bridge are the only source of light. I love trees, but the only ample shade in this stretch of Coronado may also be obscuring visibility. Do the road signs help? The letters are so small they’re illegible even in the daytime. They are not reflective, either.

SHOULDA COULDA WOULDA: Prune the trees, plant a streetlamp and stick a magnifying glass on that street sign, then we’re happy.
