Carinderia Crawl E6: Tocino and tortang talong at Honey’s Canteen on West Avenue

Silverrainxyz is the lady behind the YouTube hit “Gusto mo ba gumawa ng taong nyebe?” — the Tagalog version of Frozen’s “Do you want to build a snowman” — and on this installment of Carinderia Crawl, she she takes us to Honey’s Canteen along West Avenue, a busy four-lane street in Quezon City that stretches from Quezon Avenue all the way to Edsa.

West Avenue is lined with several businesses, including fastfood chains and expensive restaurants, and it’s hard to find cheap, home-cooked meals here.

Silver, a call center agent, says that her hobby is recording songs at home and posting them to her YouTube channel. She enjoys doing this because of the friendly and supportive online community at YouTube where she gets to meet new friends and learn recording techniques from other people.

“Gusto mo bang gumawa ng taong nyebe?” was just an experiment. Silver usually translates music from Japanese animé. She never expected this video to become a hit and is overwhelmed because of its popularity. It has reached over a million views and many Filipinos have rendered their own version of her song including recording artists Aiza Seguera, Sitti and Juris.

At Honey’s Canteen, which specializes in breakfast meals, she orders two dishes: tocino with egg and eggplant omelet.

<

WHAT SILVER HAD: Tocino with egg, eggplant omelet, a cup of rice and a bottle of soda, all for PHP110.

WHAT SILVER THINKS: She liked that the tocino was very sweet and served fresh from the frying pan. She didn’t like the fried egg because it was half-cooked. The eggplant omelet was served cold and tasted decent.

WORDS OF WISDOM: “First time ko makakuha ng dislike sa YouTube at madaming haters. Medyo masakit makatanggap ng negative comments pero iniisip ko na lang ‘yung iba na tulong for improvement and at least pinakinggan nila ang gawa ko. Thankful naman ako sa mga naka-appreciate. Be positive lang lagi.”

Honey’s Canteen, 51 West Avenue, Bgy Paltok, Quezon City. Daily 4:30am to 8pm.
