Carinderia Crawl E12: Pansit Batil Patung in Quezon City

You don’t need to travel long hours up north to have Tuguegarao’s very popular Pansit Batil Patung because there’s this place in Kamuning that serves an authentic version.

“Batil” comes from the Spanish word batir (whisk) and “patung” is Pilipino for to place on top.

Filmmaker and bicycle enthusiast Oscar Nava takes us to Bruno’s Pansit Batil Patung, located on the corner of K-1st and T-Gener Streets. He learned about this carinderia from film director John Torres who once filmed a movie in Cagayan Valley.

On this hot weekday morning, Oscar orders the jumbo version of the pansit—and is shocked when it arrives a lot bigger in real life. No wonder they call it “Hataw.”

Fortunately, Oscar had worked up an appetite from his 30-minute cycle from Taft Avenue in Malate to Quezon City. But he took his time pouring the soup and combining the ingredients just to make sure he’ll get the desired mix. The ingredients of this type of pancit are carabao meat, handmade fresh miki, onions, chili, egg soup, chorizo, tomatoes and egg.

WHAT OSCAR ATE: Pansit Batil Patung hataw-size, PHP100.

OSCAR’S VERDICT: The minced carabao meat dominates the flavor, but what he really liked was the soft miki noodles and the soup to counter the taste of the seasonings. Though he thinks the eatery serves an authentic version of Pansit Batil Patung, he still prefers the ones he had in Tuguegarao.

WORDS OF WISDOM: “Enjoy ang biking sa city kasi parang you are free to do anything. I recommend biking for health reasons and at the same time less hassle compared to commuting or taking a car. Minsan stressful nga lang kasi maraming motorista sa Manila kang makakasabay na hindi marunong sumunod sa traffic rules and regulations.”
